Whether everything is normal or we’re in the middle of a global pandemic, alcohol and operating a motor vehicle should never mix. Unfortunately, that is not always the case and millions of people still get behind the wheel after having a few drinks.
The annual cost of alcohol-related auto accidents totals more than $59 billion, but the worst part about drinking and driving is less about the economic fallout and more about the fatalities it can cause. Sadly, every day in America, another 28 people die as a result of drunk driving. This has to stop.
Ignition interlock devices are excellent for preventing drunk driving. Ignition interlocks prohibit a car’s engine from starting if its alcohol sensing device registers above a pre-set level, typically around 0.02 BAC. These devices are installed in the offender’s vehicles and can help them learn the importance of staying sober whenever they are behind the wheel. But what about car ignition interlock lockouts?
If you have one of these devices attached to your vehicle, you will not be able to start your car until you have provided a breath sample — then your device will determine whether or not you’re capable of safely driving. Even if you have not had a drink, however, sometimes your system could act up and you could be stuck in your driveway — not even able to get to work! If your device states that you’re impaired but you have not had anything to drink, what can you do?
First, you should simply wait a few minutes. After a few minutes, you should be able to try again. It might be a good idea to drink some water and swish some around your mouth in order to provide a clean and accurate sample.
If you have any alcohol on your breath at all — your device will not let you start your car, which is a good thing.
Again, drunk driving is a serious crime that should never happen. If you want to learn more about the benefits of car breathalyzer devices, give QuickStart Ignition InterLock a call today and keep our roads safe!
